Herbs, Drugs, and the Media

While the media has been quick to highlight hazards associated with herbs, the reporting of risks associated with pharmaceutical drugs has failed to capture the same headline-grabbing attention.

According to a study published in the June 1, 2000  issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers found that only 47% of 207 new stories covering three medications mentioned the risk of these new drug treatments to patients. Some estimates place the number of pharmaceutical-related hospital admissions at between 3.5 and 8.8 million annually.

When you hear an alarming report in the media about an herb or any other type of natural remedy, consider these questions:

1. Is the data based on a isolated incident or is there a body of credible clinical research to support any concerns?

2. Was the amount taken higher than the dosage given on the label, or was it take  more frequently than recommended?

3. Was a warning on the label disregarded, e.g., instructions not to use when other health conditions are present or to cease using if symptoms persist after a specified period of time?"*

Many people today take herbs not realizing that some herbs have side effects, although not as serious as many pharmaceuticals. One should always look into the contraindications and side effects for a particular herb. Before taking herbs, it is important  to consult with a trained herbalist.
